By The Weekly | March 29, 2018

Be still our beating heart when we heard the exciting news that Malaysian actor Bront Palarae will star in a new horror series on HBO Asia. The upcoming anthology Original drama series, Folklore will be based on deeply-rooted superstitions and myths of different Asian countries including Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Singapore and Thailand.

The episode based in Malaysia will be directed by HoYuhang (known for his work on Rain Dogs and  Mrs. K) with  Bront starring in the lead role. We can only assume that Bront would bring his A-game to the series based on his strong performances  in a variety of drama and comedy series in Malaysia and Southeast Asia. His film credits include Malaysian comedy series Sejoli, both seasons of HBO Asia’s Original fantasy drama series Halfworlds and most recently, Pengabdi Setan, the biggest horror hit movie of 2017.

Principal photography has already begun for the six-part hour-long series in various locations in Asia. The series is scheduled to premiere later this year on HBO Asia’s on-air, online and on-demand platforms.

According to official release from HBO Asia, each episode will seek to modernise or update Asian horror, exploring societal dysfunctions in a manner that is specific to the country but possessing themes that will resonate across the continent.
