Charred Beef in “Lemak Cili Api”

Serves 10

7 small chilli padi
3 pcs large onion
6 cloves garlic
3 stalks lemongrass
1 x 4cm turmeric
1 x 4cm ginger
2 cups water
1 tsp turmeric powder
½ starfruit, seeds discarded
1 cup fresh coconut milk
1 cup concentrated coconut milk

250g meat
1 tsp turmeric powder
½ tsp salt

1. Marinate meat together with dry ingredients for at least 3 hours.
2. Heat a pan over medium heat; grill the beef without any oil. Once the meat is ready, slice into small bite-sized pieces.
3. Pound chilli padi, onions, garlic, lemongrass, turmeric and ginger with pestle and mortar or a conventional blender.
4. In a pot, pour in the water over medium heat, then pour in the pounded mixture and add turmeric powder. At half boil, add in sliced star fruit pieces.
5. Then, add in coconut milk, and then slices of charred beef. Sprinkle salt to taste. Serve hot, with rice, or noodles of your choice.
