The Weekly’s Great Women of Our Time Awards is an annual initiative to shine the spotlight on ordinary Malaysian women, doing extraordinary things.

From painting large wall murals and creating illustrations for magazines, to collaborating on a mixed materials installation and designing sticker technology, Marini Ramlan is constantly pushing her creative boundaries as an artist.
“I want art to be reachable. I want to show art by example and tell people that art should not be taken too seriously,” she says.
It was her fashion and textiles lecturer-mother who gave Marini the freedom to doodle and paint on any surface she desired, be it on her bedroom walls, shoes or clothes.
“Thanks to my experimentation and mum’s teachings, I developed a good sense of design and colour, as well as the logic and instinct that helped me in art,” she says appreciatively.
Those formative experiences shaped Marini’s future as an artist. Her impressive portfolio includes two solo exhibitions and sought-after brand collaborations with the likes of Fendi, Nike, Piaget and Epson, to name a few.
Debunking the myth that artists are clique-ish, Marini has an open attitude to collaboration and sharing because, as she says, “without people who appreciate art, there will be no artists – we will be just ordinary people making pictures.”
Because her early experiences taught her that “teach and share” can have powerful impact, Marini started an #artforlife programme in 2011.
Today, in between juggling her career as the head of content at Malaysia’s largest production house and painting on weekends, you will find Marini sharing her love for art through social media, doing live paintings, conducting art lessons or donating art for fundraisers.
She has no intention of converting everyone into an artist, but Marini says, “A creative child is a colourful adult – and life is definitely more fun with a little imagination!”
